PURPOSE: To establish procedures for the safe use of chemical fume hoods and biological
safety cabinets.
SCOPE: Hospital, Ambulatory Surgery Center, and Ambulatory Care Pavilion
DEFINITIONS:
PROCEDURES:
I. Chemical Fume Hoods
Hazardous chemicals and radioactive materials must be controlled to protect the health
and safety of the Hospital community. In order to prevent inhalation of vapors, gases, and
aerosols, the contaminants must be captured, contained and removed by the use of hoods.
A. Fume Hood Design and Construction:
In general, all fume hoods should be constructed and contain materials that will
permit their planned use to be carried out safely. Fume hood design and
construction shall comply with the following current standards: ACGIH
Industrial Ventilation: A Manual of Recommended Practice, OSHA 1910.1450,
ANSI/ASHRAE 110, ANSI/AIHA Z9.5, NFPA 45, and SEFA 1.2.
B. Fume Hood Performance Testing:
1. Fume hood locations are provided in Appendix A. An outside
contractor, hired by the Hospital Laboratories, performs hood
performance testing annually, as per the laboratory contract. The
performance testing includes:
a. visual inspection of the physical condition of the hood interior,
sash and ductwork;
b. test and calibration of measuring device for hood airflow, if
installed;
c. test and calibration of airflow alarm, if installed;
d. face velocity measurements; and
e. dating and signing the inspection sticker on the front of the hood.
2. The Chemical Fume Hood Field Data Sheet (Appendix B) or a similar
field report is completed during the annual testing. The field reports are
submitted to Laboratory staff and EH&S.
